Not every style of hearing aids is appropriate for everyone. At Smokey Mountain Audiology & Hearing Aids, we provide our patients with different types of hearing aids that can accommodate their unique circumstances. Hearing devices can be customized by adjusting color and size so that they are able to blend into the landscape of the ear and not be overtly visible. The hearing aid style you use will depend directly on:
- The shape and size of your ear
- Your ability to manually handle the hearing device and batteries
- The extent and cause of your hearing loss
Behind the Ear
The behind-the-ear hearing aids fit behind the ear, hooking over the top. They can be used by people of all ages, regardless of the cause of hearing loss. They are able to provide more amplification than other types of hearing devices.
In the Ear
Hearing aids that fit inside of the ear are generally used for people who suffer from mild to severe hearing loss. They are custom-made devices that are available in two styles:
- A full shell that fills most of the concave area of the outer ear
- Half of a shell that fills the lower portion of the concave area of the outer ear
Inside the Ear Canal
These devices are custom-molded hearing aids that can help with mild to moderate cases of hearing loss. Its partial fit inside of the ear canal makes it less visible than other larger types.
Completely Inside of the Ear Canal
Hearing aids that rest fully inside of the ear canal are the smallest hearing aids and are most appropriate for mild to moderate loss of hearing in adults. They are rudimentary devices without extra features, and they use extremely small batteries that can be challenging to handle.
